The 2023 Novum Basket Press Syrah is a small-production, single-vineyard Syrah from Marlborough, showcasing a refined cool-climate expression of the variety. Crafted using traditional basket pressing and matured in French oak puncheons, the wine opens with lifted aromas of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, complemented by notes of violet, cracked white pepper, dried herbs and subtle savoury spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with vibrant natural acidity, fine-grained tannins and an elegant, finely textured structure. Flavours of dark berries, plum and black cherry are layered with hints of olive tapenade, cocoa and mineral complexity, leading to a long, fresh finish with excellent balance. Wild fermentation, extended skin contact and gentle basket pressing preserve purity and aromatic detail, while 14 months in French oak adds subtle depth without overshadowing the fruit. Enjoyable now, the wine will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for customers who enjoy elegant, cool-climate Syrah with perfume, spice and refined structure. Pair it with roast duck, grilled lamb, venison, beef short ribs or wild mushroom dishes. Best served slightly below room temperature after a short decant, with rewarding drinking now or careful cellaring over the next 8–12 years.
