The 2023 JC’s Own Lobethal Chardonnay is a small-batch Adelaide Hills Chardonnay made by Jaysen Collins of Massena under his JC’s Own project label. Sourced from a single vineyard in Lobethal at 480m elevation on quartz, mica schist and weathered sandstone soils, the wine reflects a more textural and slightly oxidative interpretation of cool-climate Chardonnay. Only around 558 bottles were produced.
The nose is expressive and layered, showing white peach, citrus and orchard fruit alongside toasted lees, subtle nuttiness and flinty mineral notes. There is a slightly savoury, oxidative edge inspired by Rhône white winemaking, balanced by freshness and Adelaide Hills acidity.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a creamy, textural mouthfeel from extended lees ageing in French oak puncheons and barriques. Citrus and stone fruit are supported by lively acidity and gentle toasty complexity, leading to a long, savoury and structured finish. The style is richer and broader than many Adelaide Hills Chardonnays, yet still energetic and balanced.
