The 2023 Cantina della Stazione Barbera d'Asti DOCG is a vibrant, small-production Barbera crafted by Australian-born winemaker David Fletcher in Piedmont. Following severe hail damage to his estate vineyard in 2023, the fruit was sourced from three organically farmed, high-altitude vineyards in Castagnole delle Lanze, where white calcareous clay soils produce fruit of exceptional freshness and purity. Around 50% whole bunches are used during open fermentation before nine months' maturation in seasoned French oak, creating a wine of energy, perfume and finesse. The nose is lifted and expressive, revealing red cherry, plum and blackberry layered with violets, subtle spice and wild herbs.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with Barbera's signature vibrant acidity, supple tannins and juicy dark berry fruit. Bright cherry and blackberry flavours are complemented by gentle spice and a savoury mineral edge, finishing fresh, smooth and beautifully balanced. Pure, approachable and full of character, it is a modern expression of Barbera that remains true to Piedmont's traditions.
