The 2021 Armand Heitz Saint-Romain Combe Bazin Blanc is a beautifully fresh Chardonnay from the high-altitude village of Saint-Romain in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. Saint-Romain sits above and to the west of Meursault and Auxey-Duresses, where its elevated, cooler vineyards produce some of the most naturally energetic white wines in the region. Combe Bazin is particularly limestone-driven, and Armand Heitz bottles the climat separately to highlight its individual terroir. Compared with the richer whites of neighbouring Meursault, the personality here is more about citrus, stone, freshness and immediate drinkability. Heitz himself describes Saint-Romain as somewhat geographically removed from the principal Côte de Beaune villages, but believes the quality of its wines is in no way inferior, highlighting freshness and drinkability as its defining qualities.
