The 2020 Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Côte d'Or Chardonnay is a beautifully mature white Burgundy from the Côte d'Or, produced by one of Volnay's increasingly sought-after domaines. The Bouley family has cultivated vines in Volnay for generations: Jean-Marc established his own domaine in 1974, while his son Thomas joined in 2002 and took over its direction in 2012. Although the domaine is best known for its exceptional Volnay and Pommard Pinot Noirs, this 100% Chardonnay offers a rare look at the white-wine side of the Bouley cellar. The domaine itself described 2020 as another excellent year in an extraordinary run of vintages, with high ripeness accompanied by healthy fruit and good overall balance.
The 2020 opens with ripe pear, yellow apple and stone fruit alongside white flowers, citrus and subtle buttery pastry notes. With bottle development, the fruit has begun to take on a rounder and more savoury character, with hints of fresh cream, clove and well-integrated oak emerging around the edges. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate described the wine as medium to full-bodied, satiny, ample and seamless, highlighting pear, white flowers, sweet stone fruit and pastry-like complexity. Another contemporary tasting note highlights apple, pear and fresh cream with integrated oak and clove, while retaining attractive freshness and balance.
