DOMAINE JEAN MARC THOMAS BOULEY

Domaine Jean-Marc & Thomas Bouley is a rising-star producer based in Volnay, Côte de Beaune (Burgundy), widely respected for crafting elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir. The Bouley family has deep roots in the village dating back centuries, with the modern estate established by Jean-Marc Bouley in 1974. Today, the domaine is run by his son Thomas Bouley, who took over in 2012 and has significantly elevated the estate’s reputation to one of the most exciting producers in Volnay.

The estate covers around 8.5–8.8 hectares across 29 parcels, primarily planted to Pinot Noir, with small amounts of Chardonnay and Aligoté. The vineyards are spread across key appellations such as Volnay, Pommard, and Beaune, including notable Premier Cru sites like Clos des Chênes, Les Caillerets, and Les Rugiens.

Viticulture at the domaine follows a sustainable, near-organic philosophy, avoiding herbicides and chemical fertilizers to preserve soil health and enhance terroir expression. Vineyard work is meticulous, with hand harvesting and strict sorting, while yields are carefully controlled to ensure concentration and balance.

In the cellar, Thomas Bouley combines traditional Burgundian techniques with a modern, precision-driven approach. Fermentation typically takes place in open vats over two to three weeks, followed by aging in French oak barrels (generally 15–20 months, with moderate use of new oak). The aim is not power, but purity, finesse, and transparency of site.

Stylistically, the wines are known for their refinement and accessibility, especially for Volnay. Village wines tend to be fresh, aromatic, and fruit-driven, while the Premier Crus show more depth, structure, and aging potential. Across the range, the hallmark is silky tannins, bright red fruit, floral lift, and precise balance, making them approachable in youth yet capable of graceful development over time.

Today, Domaine Jean-Marc & Thomas Bouley is increasingly seen as part of the new wave of top Volnay producers, with critics noting its progression from a solid traditional estate to a benchmark modern Burgundy domaine.
