The 2019 Hans Herzog Sauvignon Blanc Sur Lie is a distinctive and sophisticated interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc from one of New Zealand’s most respected artisan estates. Estate-grown in Marlborough and crafted from organically farmed fruit, the wine is aged on its lees (sur lie) to build texture, complexity and depth while preserving the vibrant freshness for which the variety is renowned. This Burgundian-inspired approach results in a far more layered and age-worthy style than traditional Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
The nose reveals grapefruit, lime zest and white peach alongside notes of elderflower, fresh herbs and subtle flinty minerality. The palate is richly textured yet beautifully focused, combining vibrant citrus and stone fruit with bright acidity and a creamy lees-derived mouthfeel. Hints of lemon curd, wet stone and delicate savoury notes add complexity, while the finish is long, mineral and exceptionally refined.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc that offers both freshness and texture in equal measure. Elegant, complex and highly food-friendly, it pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, grilled fish, goat’s cheese and seafood pasta. Enjoy now, or cellar through 2030–2035 as it develops additional savoury complexity and depth.
