The 2018 Château Mouton Rothschild is a monumental First Growth Pauillac composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deeply coloured and intensely aromatic, it reveals blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry and redcurrant alongside violet, liquorice, mint, nutmeg, graphite and classic Pauillac notes of cedar and cigar box.
The palate is powerful, concentrated and remarkably refined, with layers of pure black fruit supported by vibrant acidity and abundant, perfectly ripe tannins. Notes of dark chocolate, spice, scorched earth and mineral emerge through its creamy texture, leading to an exceptionally long and precise finish. Despite its scale, the wine retains superb balance and freshness, marking it as one of the great Mouton Rothschild releases of the modern era.
The 2018 label was designed by Chinese artist Xu Bing, whose “Square Word Calligraphy” combines the visual language of traditional Chinese characters with words formed from the Latin alphabet.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a world-class collector’s wine with extraordinary depth and long-term ageing potential. Ideally cellar until at least 2028–2030, with development expected through 2050 and beyond. If opened young, decant for three to four hours. Pair with dry-aged beef, roast lamb, venison, beef Wellington, truffle dishes or mature hard cheeses.
