The 2018 Château Mazeyres is a standout Pomerol from one of the appellation’s most progressive and environmentally focused estates. Situated on the western plateau of Pomerol, Château Mazeyres farms its vineyards biodynamically under the stewardship of Alain Moueix. The estate’s gravel, clay and sandy soils produce wines that combine the plush texture typical of Pomerol with freshness, elegance and a distinctive mineral character. The outstanding 2018 Bordeaux vintage provided ideal conditions for ripe, concentrated fruit while preserving balance and structure.
The nose is richly expressive, revealing black cherry, plum and blackberry layered with violet, dark chocolate, truffle and cedar spice. The palate is generous yet beautifully poised, combining ripe Merlot fruit with silky tannins and impressive freshness. Notes of mocha, liquorice and earthy complexity emerge through a long, polished finish. James Suckling awarded the wine 95 points, while Wine Advocate scored it 93+ points, praising its purity, depth and refined texture. The wine captures the richness of the vintage without sacrificing the elegance that defines great Pomerol.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb Right Bank Bordeaux that offers the charm and luxury of Pomerol without the price tag of the region’s most famous names. Plush, complex and beautifully balanced, it pairs wonderfully with beef fillet, roast duck, lamb shoulder, truffle dishes and mushroom-based cuisine. Drinking beautifully now with a decant, but it has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully through 2040 and beyond.
