The 2018 André Bonhomme Les Grappes d’Or is a rare and captivating late-harvest Chardonnay from the Mâconnais, produced by the highly respected Domaine André Bonhomme. Unlike traditional dry white Burgundy, Les Grappes d’Or is crafted from Chardonnay grapes harvested approximately two weeks after the normal picking date, allowing the fruit to achieve extraordinary ripeness before the onset of botrytis. The wine was fermented with natural yeasts, matured in older oak barrels and bottled with around 30g/L of residual sugar, creating a unique style that sits beautifully between a rich white Burgundy and a refined dessert wine.

The nose is intensely aromatic and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of ripe lemon, golden apple and white peach alongside acacia blossom, honeycomb and citrus marmalade. As the wine opens, notes of baked pear, almond cream and brioche emerge, while subtle hints of wet stone and mineral complexity provide freshness and balance. The aromatic profile is generous and seductive, combining late-harvest richness with classic Burgundian elegance.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a luxurious texture and remarkable balance. Layers of golden apple, white peach, preserved lemon and honeyed orchard fruits are supported by vibrant acidity that prevents the wine from becoming heavy. The extended élevage in older oak contributes subtle creaminess and texture, while notes of almond, brioche and crushed stone add depth and sophistication. Despite its sweetness, the wine remains fresh, focused and beautifully poised, finishing long and harmonious with lingering notes of honey, citrus peel and saline minerality.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of Burgundy’s hidden gems and a fascinating wine for customers looking to explore something truly different. Unlike traditional sweet wines that rely on botrytis or fortification, Les Grappes d’Or achieves its richness through late harvesting while maintaining the purity and mineral precision of Chardonnay. It sits somewhere between a mature white Burgundy, a late-harvest Riesling and a fine dessert wine, making it incredibly versatile at the table. Drink now or cellar comfortably for another 10–15 years. Perfect with foie gras, blue cheese, roast pork, washed-rind cheeses, tarte tatin, fruit-based desserts or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
