MACONNAIS
Mâconnais is the southernmost sub-region of Burgundy, France, known for producing approachable and high-quality wines, particularly from Chardonnay. Located south of the Côte de Beaune, the Mâconnais offers a slightly warmer climate, resulting in wines that are often more generous and fruit-forward while still retaining classic Burgundian balance.
The region benefits from rolling hills, abundant sunshine, and limestone-rich soils, which are ideal for cultivating Chardonnay. These conditions allow grapes to ripen fully, producing wines with roundness, freshness, and a subtle mineral character.
Mâconnais wines are primarily made from Chardonnay, with styles ranging from simple, easy-drinking Mâcon to more complex and structured wines from appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, and Viré-Clessé. The wines typically display notes of citrus, stone fruit, and light creaminess, with a balanced and accessible profile.
As one of Burgundy’s most versatile regions, Mâconnais offers excellent value and a wide range of styles, making it an ideal entry point for exploring Burgundy Chardonnay.
