The 2016 Venta la Vega Ternario 2 is an organic red wine from Almansa DO in southeastern Spain, crafted from 100% old-vine Garnacha Tintorera grown on limestone and clay soils. Hand-harvested and matured in French oak casks and small foudres, it offers a refined expression of this distinctive Spanish variety. The nose is layered with fresh red berries, blackberries and wild herbs, complemented by smoky mineral notes, sweet spice and hints of Mediterranean scrub.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, bright acidity and impressive depth. Juicy black fruit, red cherry and liquorice are balanced by graphite, earthy spice and subtle oak, leading to a long, savoury finish with excellent freshness and structure. Drinking beautifully now, it also has the balance to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for those looking to explore premium Spanish reds with rich fruit, savoury complexity and exceptional value. Pair it with grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef, charcuterie, roasted vegetables or aged Manchego cheese. Decant for around 30 minutes before serving to fully appreciate its layered fruit, spice and elegant texture.
