The 2016 Dog Point Chardonnay is a mature Marlborough Chardonnay made from estate-grown Mendoza and Clone 95 fruit. The nose is complex and savoury, showing ripe citrus and white stone fruit with toasted almond, hazelnut, flint and subtle smoky notes. Certified organic fruit and extended barrel ageing give this vintage considerable depth while retaining its cool-climate character.
On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied with lively acidity, concentrated citrus and stone fruit and a silky, chalky texture. Indigenous fermentation and 18 months on lees in French oak, including 15% new oak, bring layers of toast, nuts and gentle creaminess. The finish is long, mineral and citrus-driven.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a great choice for Chardonnay drinkers interested in mature Marlborough whites with flinty complexity, textured fruit and integrated oak. Now at a developed stage, well-stored bottles should show attractive secondary character. Pair with scallops, grilled white fish, roast pork, chicken or mushroom dishes.
