The 2013 Le Ragose Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva is a magnificent expression of one of Italy’s most revered wine styles. Produced by the highly respected Le Ragose estate in the hills of Valpolicella Classica, this Riserva is crafted from carefully selected Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes that are traditionally dried before fermentation using the appassimento method. The outstanding 2013 vintage and extended ageing have resulted in a wine of extraordinary depth, complexity and elegance, showcasing the estate’s reputation for producing some of the region’s most age-worthy Amarones.
The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing dried cherry, black plum and fig alongside notes of cocoa, tobacco, leather and sweet spice. The palate is rich and powerful, with layers of concentrated dark fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and remarkable freshness. Hints of espresso, dark chocolate, balsamic herbs and earthy savoury nuances unfold with each sip, leading to a long, seamless finish of exceptional persistence. More than a decade from vintage, the wine is beginning to display the complexity and harmony that define great mature Amarone.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A world-class Amarone that combines richness, sophistication and remarkable ageing potential. Powerful yet beautifully balanced, it pairs wonderfully with braised beef, venison, slow-cooked lamb, aged Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle-based dishes. Decant for at least an hour before serving, or cellar confidently through 2045 and beyond as it continues to develop extraordinary layers of complexity and refinement.
