The 2012 Hans Herzog Spirit of Marlborough Cabernet Merlot is a flagship Bordeaux-style blend from one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed artisan producers. Crafted from organically farmed estate vineyards in Marlborough, the wine reflects Hans Herzog’s uncompromising commitment to low yields, meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it showcases the estate’s ability to produce wines of remarkable depth, structure and longevity. After more than a decade of bottle age, the 2012 vintage is entering a beautifully expressive stage of maturity.
The nose reveals blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry alongside notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and graphite. The palate is rich and beautifully structured, with layers of dark fruit supported by polished tannins and fresh acidity. Hints of cigar box, dried herbs and earthy complexity add depth, while the finish is long, savoury and elegantly refined. Mature bottle development has added further complexity without diminishing the wine’s vitality and balance.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A sophisticated Bordeaux-inspired red that combines power, elegance and outstanding ageing potential. Complex, savoury and beautifully evolved, it pairs wonderfully with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and aged hard cheeses. Drinking superbly now with a decant, it will continue to develop through 2035 and beyond.
