The Künstler family's winemaking history dates back to 1648 in South Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic. Following the Second World War, the family relocated to Hochheim in the Rheingau, where Franz Künstler rebuilt the winery. Today, the estate is led by Gunter Künstler, whose meticulous vineyard management and uncompromising pursuit of quality have established Weingut Künstler among Germany's elite producers.
The estate farms some of the Rheingau's most celebrated vineyard sites, including Hochheimer Hölle, Hochheimer Kirchenstück, Hochheimer Domdechaney, and Rüdesheimer Berg. These vineyards feature diverse soils of loess, limestone, quartzite, and clay, while the Rhine River moderates the climate, creating ideal conditions for slow ripening and the development of remarkable aromatic complexity.
Weingut Künstler is best known for its Riesling, ranging from dry Grosses Gewächs wines to noble sweet Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. The wines display aromas of lime, white peach, green apple, apricot, jasmine, slate, and citrus blossom. On the palate, they combine vibrant acidity, exceptional mineral precision, and remarkable ageing potential. The estate also produces outstanding Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), which offers elegant red fruit, spice, floral notes, and refined tannins in a distinctly German cool-climate style.
