Taka K is the latest boutique wine project from acclaimed Japanese-born New Zealand winemaker Takahiro Koyama, one of the most respected names in New Zealand fine wine. Launched in 2022 after more than a decade of success with Koyama Wines, Taka K represents Koyama's return to small-scale, vineyard-focused winemaking. Built on the same philosophy that earned him international acclaim, the label focuses on expressing terroir with precision, elegance, and minimal intervention.

Based in Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, Taka K works with a small network of organically farmed vineyards, many of which feature clay-limestone soils ideally suited to cool-climate varieties. The region's warm days, cool nights, and long growing season allow grapes to ripen slowly while preserving vibrant acidity and aromatic purity. In addition to Waipara, selected wines are sourced from exceptional vineyards in Central Otago, allowing Koyama to showcase two of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir regions.

Taka K is best known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. The Pinot Noirs, including vineyard-designated bottlings such as Pearson Estate and Bedford Estate, display aromas of red cherry, plum, dried herbs, forest floor, and fine spice with silky tannins and exceptional balance. The Chardonnay offers citrus, white peach, hazelnut, and mineral complexity, while the Riesling combines vibrant lime, floral aromatics, slate-like minerality, and refreshing acidity. Every wine is produced in very limited quantities and highlights the individuality of its vineyard origin.

Winemaking follows a strict minimal-intervention philosophy. Grapes are harvested by hand where appropriate, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and matured in older French oak barrels with restrained oak influence. The wines are generally bottled without fining or filtration, allowing each vintage and vineyard to express itself naturally. Organic principles are applied throughout both the vineyard and winery, reflecting Koyama's long-held belief that great wine is made primarily in the vineyard.

Despite being a relatively new label, Taka K has quickly attracted international attention from collectors and sommeliers. Built on Takahiro Koyama's decades of experience at renowned wineries including Mountford Estate, Weingut Keller, and Au Bon Climat, the wines continue his reputation for producing some of New Zealand's most refined and terroir-driven cool-climate wines.
