The 2022 Paul Gadenne Chignin Mondeuse is a beautifully vivid and alpine expression of Mondeuse from one of Savoie’s most exciting young organic growers. Produced from two organically farmed parcels — including a small high-altitude site in Saint Jean de la Porte planted with 60-year-old vines on clay and limestone soils at around 450 metres elevation — the wine reflects Paul Gadenne’s meticulous low-intervention philosophy and the striking freshness of the Savoie terroir. Whole-bunch fermentation and élevage on fine lees preserve the wine’s purity, spice and mountain energy.
The nose reveals blackberry, cranberry and sour cherry layered alongside cracked black pepper, violet, forest herbs and subtle earthy spice, giving the wine remarkable aromatic lift and individuality. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with vibrant natural acidity, fine tannins and a tightly focused mineral core. Layers of juicy dark and red berry fruit are balanced by savoury spice, alpine freshness and gentle earthy complexity, finishing energetic, peppery and beautifully persistent with excellent transparency and finesse. Despite its modest alcohol, the wine delivers impressive concentration and structure, showcasing Mondeuse’s distinctive combination of freshness, spice and mountain character.
