The 2021 Equis Cornas is a beautifully classical and deeply mineral Northern Rhône Syrah from Maxime Graillot and Thomas Schmittel’s highly regarded Equis project. Sourced from steep granitic vineyards across the famed Cornas lieux-dits of Les Chaillots, La Sabarotte and La Côte, the wine comes from organically managed old vines, including parcels approaching 80–90 years of age. Fermented with around 25% whole bunches and aged primarily in older Burgundy barrels and large-format oak, the 2021 vintage reflects the cooler, more traditionally styled growing season, delivering exceptional freshness, structure and granite-driven tension.
The nose reveals blackberry, dark plum and cassis layered alongside violets, cracked pepper, smoked meat and graphite minerality, giving the wine remarkable aromatic lift and Cornas character. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with firm yet finely layered tannins, vibrant natural acidity and a tightly wound mineral core. Layers of dark berry fruit, licorice and savoury spice unfold with iron-rich earthiness and smoky granite tension, finishing long, structured and beautifully persistent with impressive ageing potential. Critics have praised the wine’s meaty, rootsy complexity together with its mineral grip and layered depth, highlighting the purity and classical balance of the 2021 vintage.
Ben’s Recommendation:
The 2021 Equis Cornas is a superb modern Cornas — mineral, savoury and beautifully structured with outstanding freshness and old-vine depth. Perfect with roast lamb, venison, braised beef, mushroom dishes or chargrilled meats. Decant if drinking young or cellar gracefully through 2040+.
