CORNAS

Cornas is one of the most prestigious appellations in France’s Northern Rhône Valley and is dedicated exclusively to the production of red wine made from 100% Syrah. Located on the western bank of the Rhône River near the city of Valence, Cornas has earned international acclaim for producing some of the most powerful, structured, and age-worthy expressions of Syrah in the world.

The appellation is characterised by steep, south-facing hillside vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils. These vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure and a continental climate, allowing grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining freshness and complexity. The combination of granite terroir and Syrah creates wines with remarkable depth, concentration, and minerality.

Cornas wines are typically deeply coloured and intensely aromatic, displaying notes of blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, black pepper, smoked meat, olive tapenade, liquorice, and spice. In their youth, the wines can be powerful and firmly structured, but with bottle age they develop greater complexity, revealing earthy, gamey, and savoury characteristics that are highly prized by collectors.

Historically considered one of the Rhône Valley’s most traditional appellations, Cornas has experienced a renaissance through the work of leading producers such as Auguste Clape, Alain Voge, Domaine Courbis, Vincent Paris, and Thierry Allemand. These producers have helped establish Cornas as a benchmark for world-class Syrah.
