The 2022 Byrne Farm Syrah is a distinctive cool-climate red from Orange, NSW, crafted by Jeff Byrne as a homage to his Hunter Valley roots. Interestingly, despite now being labelled simply as "Syrah," the wine is actually a blend of approximately 86% Shiraz and 14% Pinot Noir - combining the spice and structure of Syrah with the perfume and brightness of Pinot. Fruit is sourced from elevated Orange vineyards, with the Shiraz from a lower-altitude 680m site and the Pinot Noir from the historic Springvale vineyard. The nose is expressive and layered, revealing dark plum, Bing cherry and raspberry alongside paperbark, cumin and ground ginger spice. There is a subtle savoury edge and a touch of reduction on opening, adding complexity and structure while maintaining freshness and aromatic lift.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, granular tannins that give the wine a sinewy, energetic feel. The fruit profile balances dark and red berries with spice, earth and mineral nuance, while the Pinot Noir component adds freshness and crunch. The structure is detailed and savoury rather than heavy, leading to a long, vibrant and persistent finish with excellent drinkability.

At Wine More Cellars, this is a fantastic modern Australian Syrah blend that sits somewhere between cool-climate Syrah and a Northern Rhône-inspired Pinot/Syrah style. Compared to fuller-bodied Shiraz, it offers more freshness, spice and aromatic lift, with the Pinot Noir component bringing extra vibrancy and finesse. It’s a highly versatile food wine with serious character for the price. Best enjoyed with a quick decant if drinking young. Drink now through 2032+ as it develops further savoury complexity. Excellent with duck, lamb, chargrilled meats or earthy dishes like mushroom and lentils.
