MOURVEDRE
Mourvèdre is a traditional red grape variety originating from the Mediterranean regions of France and Spain, highly regarded for producing powerful, structured, and age-worthy wines. It is best known in southern France, particularly in Bandol and the Rhône Valley, where it plays a key role in many classic blends.
The grape thrives in warm, sunny climates where it can achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness and complexity. Mourvèdre is well suited to Mediterranean conditions, benefiting from coastal influences, long growing seasons, and well-drained soils that help develop concentration and depth.
Mourvèdre wines are typically medium to full-bodied, displaying flavors of blackberry, plum, dark cherry, herbs, black pepper, leather, earth, and smoky spice. The grape is known for its firm tannins, savory character, and excellent aging potential. In blends, Mourvèdre adds structure, complexity, and earthy depth alongside varieties such as Grenache and Syrah.
In France, Mourvèdre is especially associated with Bandol, where it produces some of the country’s most distinctive and long-lived red wines. The variety is also widely planted in Spain, where it is known as Monastrell, as well as in Australia and California.
As one of the Mediterranean’s signature red grape varieties, Mourvèdre is appreciated for its richness, complexity, and strong regional character.
