The 2019 Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant and restrained expression of Napa Valley Cabernet, blending fruit from Coombsville, Rutherford and Oak Knoll. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. It shows bright cherry, blackberry, cranberry and mulberry alongside graphite, cedar and subtle herbal notes.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, vibrant and finely structured, with fresh red and dark fruit supported by beautiful acidity and moderate tannins. Slow fermentation and gentle extraction preserve freshness and aromatic detail, while 20 months in predominantly used French oak adds subtle structure and spice without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long, balanced and savoury.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Cabernet drinkers looking for a more refined and fresh expression of Napa Valley rather than an excessively rich style. Its bright fruit, fine tannins and savoury complexity make it enjoyable now with decanting while offering excellent potential for further development. Ideal with grilled steak, roast lamb, beef short ribs, mushroom dishes or aged cheeses.
