The 2022 Kenzie Tearz is a beautifully playful and boundary-pushing “white noir” from New Zealand winemaker Dave Mackintosh’s small Hawke’s Bay project. Produced from 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay sourced from the organically farmed Mangatahi vineyard, the wine was whole-bunch pressed directly to tank with minimal skin contact, creating a pale blush-toned wine that sits somewhere between rosé, blanc de noirs and light orange wine. Fermented naturally with full solids before ageing briefly in old oak puncheons without fining or filtration, Tearz reflects Mackintosh’s lo-fi philosophy and love of expressive, highly drinkable wines.
The nose reveals maraschino cherry, rhubarb and fresh strawberry layered alongside red apple skin, brioche and subtle savoury spice, giving the wine remarkable aromatic charm and lift. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, creamy texture and a gently chewy phenolic edge that adds complexity and structure. Layers of red berry fruit and orchard fruit unfold with saline freshness and a dry, savoury finish, making the wine both playful and surprisingly serious. Critics and merchants consistently highlight its “highly drinkable” nature together with its fresh, textural and lightly funky personality.
