HAWKE'S BAY
Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious wine regions, located on the eastern coast of the North Island. First planted with vines in the 1850s, the region has developed a global reputation for producing some of New Zealand’s most complex and age-worthy wines.
The warm maritime climate, abundant sunshine, and diverse soils make Hawke’s Bay uniquely suited to a wide range of grape varieties. The region is particularly famous for its Bordeaux-style blends, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Merlot-Cabernet wines, many of which rank among the finest produced in the Southern Hemisphere.
One of Hawke’s Bay’s most renowned sub-regions is Gimblett Gravels, an ancient riverbed of stony soils that produces powerful yet structured wines with remarkable concentration and minerality. Other important districts include Bridge Pa Triangle, Te Awanga, and Havelock North, each contributing distinctive terroir expressions.
Today, Hawke’s Bay is home to some of New Zealand’s most respected wineries, including Craggy Range, Te Mata Estate, Trinity Hill, and Elephant Hill, all helping establish the region as a benchmark for premium New Zealand wine.
For wine lovers seeking a balance of New World fruit purity and Old World structure, Hawke’s Bay stands as one of the most exciting and collectable wine regions in the Southern Hemisphere.
