CHATEAU LAFON ROCHET

Château Lafon-Rochet is a historic Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) estate in Saint-Estèphe, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Located in the northern Médoc, the château produces classic Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux that combines the depth and structure associated with Saint-Estèphe with refined fruit, freshness and impressive ageing potential.

The history of Château Lafon-Rochet extends back several centuries. A major chapter began when the Tesseron family acquired the estate in 1960 and undertook extensive work to restore its vineyards and reputation. In 2021, the property was acquired by the Lorenzetti family, owners of several notable Bordeaux estates, beginning a new period of investment and development while maintaining Lafon-Rochet's distinctive identity.

The estate occupies an excellent position in Saint-Estèphe, neighbouring some of the appellation's most celebrated vineyards. Its terroir is characterised by gravel over clay-rich subsoils, providing both effective drainage and valuable water retention during dry periods. This combination is particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and helps produce wines with concentration, structure and freshness.

Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of Château Lafon-Rochet, complemented principally by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also represented in the vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes cassis, graphite and firm structure, while Merlot provides richness and supple texture. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add further aromatic complexity and spice.

The wines typically reveal blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherry, accompanied by cedar, graphite, tobacco, violet and savoury spice. The palate combines concentrated fruit with structured yet polished tannins and fresh acidity. With bottle age, the finest vintages can develop additional notes of leather, cigar box, forest floor and earthy complexity.

Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting are followed by precise vinification of individual parcels. Maturation in French oak barrels adds texture and complexity while allowing the dark fruit and distinctive Saint-Estèphe terroir to remain at the forefront. The estate's approach seeks to balance traditional Médoc structure with increasing finesse and accessibility.

Château Lafon-Rochet is instantly recognisable for its striking yellow château, while its Fourth Growth pedigree and excellent location make it a compelling choice for collectors exploring classified Saint-Estèphe. Strong vintages offer both immediate character and the structure required for extended cellaring.
