The Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is one of the world's greatest non-vintage Champagnes, representing the pinnacle of the art of blending. Every edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is a unique creation, crafted to fulfil the vision of founder Joseph Krug: to produce the finest possible Champagne every year, regardless of vintage conditions. The 173ème Édition is built around the 2017 harvest and is an extraordinary blend of 150 individual wines from 13 different vintages, spanning 2001 to 2017. Reserve wines account for 31% of the final blend, while the assemblage consists of 44% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier. More than 20 years of craftsmanship went into creating this release before it reached consumers.
The bouquet is immediately captivating, revealing expressive aromas of toasted brioche, warm pastry cream and freshly baked bread intertwined with ripe peach, apricot and preserved citrus. As the wine opens, layers of vanilla custard, verbena, baba au rhum and roasted pine nuts emerge, complemented by delicate notes of acacia honey, chalk and subtle smoky minerality. Compared with earlier editions, the 173ème shows exceptional generosity and richness while retaining the unmistakable precision and freshness that define Krug. The aromatic profile is both powerful and remarkably elegant, continuing to evolve over many minutes in the glass.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with an exceptionally fine, creamy mousse and remarkable concentration. Flavours of ripe stone fruits, peach in syrup and vibrant citrus unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by layers of toasted brioche, roasted nuts, beeswax and delicate spice. Pinot Noir provides structure and vinous depth, Chardonnay contributes freshness and precision, while Meunier adds roundness and generosity. Despite its richness, the wine remains beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity, finishing with remarkable energy, saline minerality and a long, mouthwatering lemon freshness. The low dosage of 4 g/L allows the purity of the fruit and terroir to shine through while ensuring exceptional ageing potential.
