PINOT MEUNIER
Pinot Meunier, increasingly referred to simply as Meunier, is a red-skinned grape variety best known as one of the three principal grapes of Champagne, alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Historically regarded primarily as a blending component, Meunier has undergone a significant reassessment among growers and wine enthusiasts, with an increasing number of producers demonstrating its ability to produce distinctive, terroir-driven wines in its own right.
The variety belongs to the Pinot family and is a mutation of Pinot Noir. Its name comes from the French word meunier, meaning “miller”, referring to the distinctive powdery white appearance of the underside of its leaves and young shoots, which can look as though they have been dusted with flour.
Champagne remains the spiritual home of Meunier, where it accounts for approximately 31% of vineyard plantings. It is particularly important in the Vallée de la Marne, where clay-rich soils and cooler conditions suit the variety exceptionally well. Its relatively late budburst makes it less vulnerable to spring frost than Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, historically making it an invaluable grape in Champagne's more challenging vineyard sites.
In traditional Champagne blends, Meunier contributes fruit, roundness and generosity. While Chardonnay is often associated with finesse and longevity and Pinot Noir with structure and body, Meunier can provide a softer, more immediately expressive dimension. Aromatically, Meunier can display peach, apricot, plum, strawberry, raspberry and cherry, alongside floral and occasionally spicy characters. As the wine develops, its youthful fruit can evolve toward richer dried-fruit, honeyed, nutty and savoury characteristics. The precise expression varies considerably according to vineyard, ripeness and winemaking.
One of the most exciting developments in Champagne has been the rise of 100% Meunier Champagne. Rather than treating the grape solely as a supporting component in a blend, a growing number of grower-producers bottle individual vineyards and pure Meunier cuvées. Because Meunier is a dark-skinned grape, these white sparkling wines can be classified as Blanc de Noirs, revealing a particularly expressive combination of fruit, texture and freshness.
Meunier is not limited to sparkling wine. When vinified as a still red, it can produce relatively light-coloured wines with bright red fruit, lively acidity and gentle tannins, making it particularly appealing to drinkers who enjoy elegant Pinot-family varieties. Examples are increasingly appearing from cool-climate regions outside Champagne.
Australia has a particularly fascinating relationship with Pinot Meunier. The variety has historically been planted for sparkling-wine production in regions including Tasmania, Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley and Victoria's Great Western region. Best's Great Western has exceptionally old Meunier vines dating to 1868, which Wine Companion describes as the oldest surviving Pinot Meunier vines in the world.
Contemporary Australian producers are increasingly exploring Meunier as a serious standalone wine. In cooler regions, it can produce delicate, aromatic reds with strawberry, raspberry and cherry characters, restrained tannin and refreshing acidity. This emerging category offers an interesting alternative for drinkers who appreciate Pinot Noir, Gamay and other lighter-bodied red wines.
