The 2023 Chalmers Top Block is the inaugural release of a unique Heathcote field blend sourced entirely from the winery's rocky Top Block vineyard on the Mount Camel Range. Combining Aglianico, Sagrantino, Nero d'Avola, Piedirosso and a small portion of Falanghina, it captures the character of this elevated site with aromas of black cherry, blueberry and plum layered with floral notes, tobacco, spice and rocky earth nuances. The blend is designed to express place rather than any single variety.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and impressive balance. Dark cherry, plum and berry fruits are supported by savoury spice, earthy complexity and subtle floral lift, while 18 months in seasoned French oak adds texture without masking the fruit. The five varieties work seamlessly together, creating a wine that is structured yet energetic, finishing long, fresh and finely detailed.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is a fantastic choice for adventurous wine lovers looking to explore the potential of Italian varieties grown in Australian soils. Distinctive, complex and highly food-friendly, it drinks beautifully now with decanting and has the structure to evolve through to 2038. Pair with grilled bistecca, slow-cooked lamb, moussaka or rich Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
