MURDOCH HILL
Murdoch Hill is a family-owned boutique winery tucked into the scenic Oakbank region of the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. The property has been held by the Downer family since 1939, with vines planted in 1998 by Charlie and Julie Downer. Today, their son Michael Downer—who honed his craft at Shaw & Smith, Vietti in Barolo, and Best’s in Great Western—runs winemaking operations since 2012.
Their home estate spans approximately 20 ha on east-facing slopes rising above 500 m elevation—the highest in the district—with an additional 8.5 ha in Lenswood and regional fruit from Piccadilly, Lobethal, and Basket Range. All vineyards are farmed holistically, using organic methods, no herbicides, and minimal intervention to express true terroir.
Murdoch Hill blends deep generational roots with modern, low-intervention winemaking under Michael Downer’s leadership. Their wines—marked by clarity, freshness, and regional authenticity—are among the most compelling in the Adelaide Hills. Ideal for fans of cool‑climate Chardonnay, expressive Pinot Noir, elegant Syrah, and vibrant white blends.
