The Champagne Laherte Frères 1er Cru Nature de Craie NV (Base 2024) is a distinctive Blanc de Blancs made entirely from Chardonnay grown in the Premier Cru villages of Vertus and Voipreux on the Côte des Blancs. The vineyards include mature vines planted in 1960, 1965 and 1987, with chalk close to the surface giving the wine its name and distinctive mineral character. The Base 2024 release shows lemon, green apple and white peach alongside white flowers, citrus zest, chalk and subtle saline notes.
On the palate, it is finely textured and beautifully focused, with vibrant acidity, delicate mousse and layers of citrus, orchard fruit and subtle stone fruit. Lemon and green apple are complemented by white peach, white flowers and gentle lees-derived richness, while the chalk-rich soils bring a precise stony and saline character. Fermentation in small barrels, full malolactic conversion and time on fine lees give the wine added breadth and texture without masking its mineral freshness. As a Brut Nature with zero dosage and no added sulphur, the finish is exceptionally dry, clean and persistent, with lingering citrus, chalk and savoury mineral notes.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Champagne drinkers who enjoy precise, mineral-driven Blanc de Blancs with depth and very little sweetness. The Base 2024 release combines ripe Chardonnay fruit with chalky freshness and a subtle savoury character, making it particularly versatile at the table. Best enjoyed now or over the next 5–7 years. Serve chilled with oysters, scallop crudo, seared scallops, grilled prawns with lemon, sashimi, goat’s cheese gougères, or aged Comté.
