The 2023 Alain Graillot Syrah Morocco Syrocco is a beautifully vibrant and savoury Syrah that captures the surprising elegance possible from Morocco’s Atlantic-influenced vineyards. Originally inspired by Alain Graillot’s discovery of the Zenata region while cycling between Casablanca and Rabat, the wine is produced from organically farmed Syrah grown on limestone, clay and gravel soils cooled by ocean breezes. The nose reveals blackberry, black plum and dark cherry layered alongside cracked pepper, sandalwood, dried herbs and subtle smoky spice, giving the wine impressive freshness and Rhône-like character.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, vibrant natural acidity and a supple mineral core. Layers of dark berry fruit, black olive and savoury spice are balanced by freshness and gentle earthy complexity, finishing smooth, energetic and beautifully persistent with excellent drinkability. Fermented in concrete and matured partly in large older oak casks, the wine retains purity and freshness while gaining subtle textural depth and structure. The Atlantic climate and elevated inland vineyards help preserve tension and aromatic lift despite the warm Moroccan conditions.
