The 2024 Azores Wine Company Arinto dos Açores is one of Portugal’s most distinctive white wines, produced from the rare Arinto dos Açores grape grown on the volcanic island of Pico in the Azores. The vines are planted directly into cracks in black basalt rock, just metres from the Atlantic Ocean, and protected from salty sea winds by traditional stone walls known as currais. Founded by António Maçanita, Paulo Machado and Filipe Rocha, Azores Wine Company has become the benchmark producer of these extraordinary volcanic wines.
The nose shows grapefruit, lime zest and green apple, underpinned by intense mineral and saline notes. The palate is vibrant and focused, with bright citrus fruit, mouthwatering acidity and a distinctive oceanic character that carries through a long, crisp finish. Luis Gutiérrez awarded the 2024 vintage 93 points, praising its depth, texture and energy, while the wine's hallmark freshness and minerality remain firmly intact.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A fascinating white wine that truly speaks of its place. Fresh, mineral and intensely saline, it is a perfect match for oysters, scallops, grilled fish, prawns and other seafood dishes. Enjoy now for its youthful vibrancy or cellar through 2031 as it develops additional complexity and texture.
