The 2023 Azores Wine Company Terrantez do Pico is one of Portugal’s most fascinating white wines, made from an indigenous Azorean grape that was once on the brink of extinction. When António Maçanita began working with the variety, fewer than 100 vines were known to remain. Today, thanks largely to these efforts, Terrantez do Pico has been revived on the volcanic island of Pico, where vines grow among black basalt rock just metres from the Atlantic Ocean.
The nose shows grapefruit, lime zest and green apple, layered with dried herbs, crushed stone and intense maritime salinity. The palate is taut, mineral and beautifully textured, combining vibrant acidity with a distinctive saline edge that speaks directly of its ocean-influenced terroir. Luis Gutiérrez awarded the wine 93 points, praising its freshness, balance and precision, while noting its excellent natural acidity and ageing potential.
