Tropa Tequila: The Melbourne-Born Reposado in a Mushroom Bottle

Conceived in Melbourne, made in the Jalisco highlands, sealed with one of four collectable caps you don't get to choose.

Three friends from Melbourne, Paul Solomon, Joost Poulus and Nick Heine, decided the tequila they wanted did not exist and went to the highlands of Jalisco to make it. The liquid is conventional in the best sense: 100% blue Weber agave, rested three months in American oak, bottled at 40%. The bottle is not conventional at all. It is a stout white ceramic stem with a domed mushroom cap, closer to a sculpture than a spirits bottle, and the brand has since taken that idea further with an Añejo designed by Nikolai Haas of the Haas Brothers, limited to 300 pieces and not something we can get.

What we do have is the Reposado. One spirit, one price, four caps. This is how it works.

The cap is chosen for you

Every bottle of Tropa Reposado ships with one of four cap designs: Scarlet, Skye, Moss or Midas. The boxes are sealed and identical, so neither we nor you know which is inside until it is opened. If you want a specific colour we cannot promise it. If you want the set, that is four bottles and some luck. It is a deliberate choice by the brand and it is the reason the product page carries the line "chosen at random" in bold.

What is in the glass

Jalisco, Mexico · Reposado · 40% · Cap at random

NoseRoasted agave with cinnamon, hazelnut and vanilla over caramelised oak.

PalateSmooth and velvety. Warm baking spice and a subtle touch of pepper into a clean, lingering finish.

ServeNeat or over ice · Or as the base of a premium cocktail · No need to cellar

Three months in oak is the short end of reposado, which is why the agave still leads and the vanilla sits behind it rather than on top. Pour it neat first. Then decide whether it goes in a Paloma.

Reposado, and why it matters here

Tequila is classified by how long it rests in oak. Blanco is unaged or barely aged and tastes of cooked agave, pepper and citrus. Reposado rests between two months and a year, long enough to pick up vanilla and spice from the barrel without losing the agave. Añejo goes past a year and heads toward the territory of aged whisky and brandy. Tropa sits at the young end of reposado, which keeps it versatile: rich enough to sip, bright enough to mix.

Who this is for

At $330 the tequila is only part of what you are paying for; the bottle is designed to stay on a shelf long after it is empty, and the brand talks about it in those terms. That makes it a gift before it is a house pour. If you want a reposado to keep behind the bar for margaritas, look at the rest of our tequila range. If you want the bottle someone will still be talking about at the end of the night, this is the one. Cap colour is luck.
