The 2023 Swinney Mourvèdre Rosé is one of the most serious and compelling rosé wines being made in Australia today, sourced from dry-grown bush vines at the Powderbark vineyard in Frankland River, Western Australia. Crafted by Rob Mann, the wine is led by Mourvèdre (86%) with small portions of Grenache and Vermentino, combining the structure and savoury complexity of Bandol-inspired rosé with the freshness and mineral character of Frankland River. Whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation and élevage in seasoned French oak give the wine remarkable texture and depth while maintaining precision and finesse. The nose is intensely aromatic and finely layered, revealing wild strawberry, pomegranate and red cherry alongside rose water, dried herbs and Szechuan pepper spice. There are deeper savoury nuances of oyster shell, beeswax, toasted sourdough and a subtle ferrous minerality that has become a hallmark of Swinney’s wines. Floral lift, saline freshness and a lightly nutty complexity create a rosé that feels far more sophisticated and layered than most contemporary styles.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a beautifully textural, almost vinous feel balanced by vibrant natural acidity. Flavours of rhubarb, watermelon, cranberry and wild strawberry are supported by chalky minerality, savoury spice and a subtle pithy grip from the Mourvèdre. Despite its concentration and complexity, the wine remains remarkably fresh and energetic, finishing bone dry, saline and persistent with a fine powdery tannin structure that gives the wine genuine gastronomic appeal.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is unquestionably one of the benchmark rosé wines in Australia — and arguably closer in style to top-tier Bandol rosé than Provence. Compared to lighter, simple fruit-driven rosé, Swinney offers far more texture, savoury detail and mineral complexity while still remaining incredibly drinkable and refreshing. The 2023 vintage is especially impressive, combining the cool season’s freshness with additional depth and structure. It’s a rosé designed for the table as much as for aperitif drinking, and one that will comfortably evolve over several years in bottle. Enjoy well chilled now or cellar through 2030+ as it develops further savoury and nutty complexity. Exceptional with grilled seafood, charcuterie, roast chicken, Mediterranean dishes or anything with spice and umami.
