The 2023 Black Estate Home Chardonnay is a distinctive Chardonnay from the Home Vineyard in Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. Grown on calcareous clay soils, it shows white peach, nectarine and melon alongside citrus, subtle wild strawberry and gentle savoury notes.
On the palate, it is concentrated and finely textured, with vibrant acidity balancing ripe stone fruit, yuzu and subtle honeyed notes. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented with vineyard-derived yeast in French oak, including 21% new barrels. Full malolactic fermentation and eight months on fermentation lees add texture and depth, while a persistent saline character keeps the wine fresh and focused.
