The 2022 Woodstock Pilot’s View Shiraz is a richly flavoured McLaren Vale Shiraz inspired by the vision of Woodstock founder Douglas Collett, whose experiences flying over European vineyards during WWII helped shape his passion for Australian table wine. Sourced from premium estate vineyards and neighbouring Blewitt Springs sites, the wine reflects the region’s combination of ripe fruit intensity, savoury spice and polished structure. The nose is vibrant and expressive, showing aromas of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry layered with mint, vanilla bean, pepper spice and subtle earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with smooth tannins and balanced acidity creating a generous yet refined mouthfeel. Flavours of dark berries, ripe plum and black cherry are supported by notes of mocha, savoury spice and well-integrated oak from extended maturation in French and American oak hogsheads. The sandy Blewitt Springs soils contribute freshness and aromatic lift, while the wine’s supple tannin profile gives it excellent drinkability without sacrificing structure. The finish is long, silky and persistent with lingering dark fruit and spice character.
Ben’s Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this Shiraz is an excellent option for customers who enjoy classic McLaren Vale reds with generous fruit, savoury depth and polished tannins. Particularly well suited to grilled ribeye, chargrilled vegetables, slow-cooked lamb or smoky barbecue dishes. Drinking beautifully now with decanting, though the structure and fruit concentration will continue to develop over the next 5–10 years.
