The 2022 Arnot-Roberts California Red Wine is a classic Bordeaux-inspired blend crafted from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, sourced from several historic California vineyards including Massa, Bedrock, Gordenker and Persia. Originally created as a one-off project following the 2020 harvest, the wine has become a standout expression of Arnot-Roberts' restrained, site-driven style. The nose is vibrant and aromatic, revealing blackcurrant, red cherry and blackberry layered with violets, dried herbs, graphite and subtle baking spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with bright natural acidity and fine, structured tannins. Flavours of dark berries, cassis and plum are complemented by savoury herbs, cedar and a fine mineral edge, leading to a long, balanced finish. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for 10 months in 50% neutral French oak barrels and 50% concrete tanks, the wine retains remarkable freshness while offering depth and ageing potential.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for customers who appreciate elegant, old-school California Cabernet-based blends with freshness and structure rather than overt richness. It pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised beef or mushroom dishes. While approachable with a short decant, the 2021 vintage will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years.
