The 2021 Denton Nebbiolo is a striking cool-climate expression of Italy’s noble grape, grown on the dramatic Denton View Hill Vineyard overlooking the Yarra Valley. Planted on ancient granitic soils and farmed with a focus on sustainability, the vineyard’s elevated position and cool conditions allow Nebbiolo to ripen slowly, producing a wine of remarkable perfume, structure and finesse. Matured in large-format seasoned oak, it is an elegant Australian interpretation that honours the variety’s Piedmontese heritage while expressing its unique Yarra Valley terroir.
The nose reveals aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal layered with orange peel, dried herbs, star anise and subtle earthy spice. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully structured, with vibrant red fruit supported by fine, chalky tannins and bright natural acidity. Notes of liquorice, crushed stone and savoury herbs add complexity, leading to a long, refined finish with exceptional freshness and mineral precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A beautifully poised Nebbiolo that rewards both food and patience. Its vibrant acidity and firm structure make it an excellent match for mushroom risotto, duck, osso buco, slow-braised lamb and aged Parmesan. Decant for an hour if enjoying now, or cellar confidently through 2038 as it develops the classic floral, earthy and truffle-like complexity of mature Nebbiolo.
