The 2021 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is a single-vineyard Sangiovese from the renowned Montosoli hill in northern Montalcino. Planted in 1997 on mineral-rich galestro soils, the vineyard produces a particularly structured expression, showing red cherry, wild raspberry and blackberry with violet, rose, Mediterranean herbs and graphite-like mineral notes.
On the palate, it is concentrated and finely structured with vibrant acidity, firm tannins and layers of red berry and sour cherry fruit. Blood orange, herbs and a pronounced saline mineral character add complexity, leading to a long, savoury finish. The 2021 vintage particularly highlights Montosoli’s combination of depth, verticality and more pronounced tannin structure.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a great choice for Brunello collectors who enjoy structured, mineral-driven Sangiovese with serious ageing potential. Only 4,133 bottles of the 2021 were produced, with published drinking windows extending to around 2045–2050. Pair with bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, wild mushroom pasta, slow-cooked beef or aged pecorino.
