2021 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet Grand Cru
- Description
- Info
The 2021 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet Grand Cru is one of the rarest and most coveted white wines in Burgundy, produced from a tiny parcel within the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard — a site widely regarded as the greatest terroir for Chardonnay in the world. Domaine Blain-Gagnard, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, received its parcel from Jacques Gagnard in 1999 and produces only one to two barrels annually from vines planted in 1934, making this one of Burgundy’s most exclusive bottlings.
The 2021 vintage is particularly noteworthy for its classical style and exceptional scarcity. Severe frost dramatically reduced yields throughout Burgundy, resulting in wines of remarkable concentration, freshness and mineral precision. Production from Montrachet in 2021 was among the lowest of the modern era, further enhancing the rarity of wines from this historic vineyard.
The nose is extraordinarily complex and refined, revealing layers of lemon curd, white peach, pear and citrus blossom alongside crushed limestone, hazelnut, honeycomb and delicate spice. With air, the wine develops remarkable depth and nuance, showing the hallmark combination of richness and precision that defines great Montrachet. The old-vine fruit contributes extraordinary concentration while retaining freshness and aromatic lift.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet perfectly poised, combining immense power with crystalline definition. Concentrated citrus and orchard fruit are framed by vibrant acidity, profound mineral tension and a seamless texture that seems to expand endlessly across the palate. Blain-Gagnard describes Montrachet as Chardonnay in its most complete form, possessing power, concentration and structure in perfect balance. The finish is exceptionally long, saline and layered, with remarkable persistence and precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is true collector-level white Burgundy and one of the finest expressions of Chardonnay available anywhere in the world. Compared to Bâtard-Montrachet, it offers greater refinement and precision; compared to Chevalier-Montrachet, it combines similar minerality with more depth and breadth. Blain-Gagnard’s tiny holding of old vines produces a style that emphasises purity, balance and terroir transparency rather than excessive richness. The 2021 vintage is especially appealing for collectors who appreciate classical Burgundy structure, tension and longevity. This is a wine built for generations rather than decades. Best from 2030 onwards and capable of ageing for 30–40+ years. Perfect with lobster, turbot, caviar, truffle dishes or the finest Michelin-starred cuisine.
