The 2021 Bisci Marche Rosso IGT Merlot is a charming and unexpected red from one of Italy’s great white wine producers. Best known for benchmark Verdicchio from Matelica, the Bisci family also farms a tiny parcel of Merlot on limestone and clay soils in the hills of Marche. Certified organic since 2019, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and matured in cement, allowing the purity of the fruit and the freshness of the site to shine through.
The nose reveals blackberry, red plum and dark cherry alongside notes of dried herbs, liquorice and subtle smoky spice. Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, the palate combines juicy fruit with soft tannins, bright acidity and a savoury Mediterranean character. Vinous awarded the previous vintage 90 points and Decanter 91 points, highlighting the wine’s freshness, balance and impressive value.
