The 2020 Château de Haute-Serre Cahors is the flagship wine of the historic Vigouroux family estate, one of Cahors’ most revered properties. Situated on the limestone plateau of Haute-Serre at 300 metres elevation, the vineyard is planted predominantly to Malbec on Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils enriched with iron and blue clay. Replanted by Georges Vigouroux in the 1970s after the devastation of phylloxera, Château de Haute-Serre is now regarded as one of the benchmark estates of Cahors and a leading exponent of French Malbec.
The nose is deeply expressive, revealing blackberry, cassis and dark plum layered with violet, anise, graphite and subtle spice. Full-bodied yet remarkably polished, the palate combines concentrated black fruit with velvety tannins, fresh acidity and a distinctive mineral backbone. Twelve months of oak maturation add complexity without overshadowing the fruit, while notes of pepper, liquorice and earthy savouriness emerge through a long, structured finish. Decanter awarded the wine 91 points, praising its floral aromas, freshness and vibrant finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb example of modern Cahors that showcases the depth and power of Malbec while maintaining elegance and freshness. Rich, savoury and beautifully structured, it pairs wonderfully with grilled ribeye, lamb shoulder, cassoulet, venison and hard cheeses. Drinking well with a decant today, but it has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully through 2035–2040, developing classic notes of truffle, leather and forest floor with age.
