The 2020 Christophe Billon Côte-Rôtie Côte Rozier is sourced from one of the great lieux-dits of Côte-Rôtie, located on the steep schist slopes just above the famous La Landonne vineyard. Christophe Billon, who previously worked with Guigal before focusing on his own estate, farms several small parcels within Côte Rozier, including vines planted by his grandfather in 1942. Aged for over two years in French oak, this is a powerful yet refined expression of Northern Rhône Syrah.
The nose reveals blackberry, black plum and cassis layered with violet, cracked pepper, smoked meat, dark chocolate and graphite. Full-bodied and deeply structured, the palate combines concentrated dark fruit with silky tannins, vibrant freshness and a long mineral finish. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the wine 95 points, praising its smoky, meaty complexity, depth and ageing potential. Rich and expressive in its youth, it remains beautifully balanced and unmistakably Côte-Rôtie.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A serious Côte-Rôtie that delivers much of the character and pedigree of its famous neighbours at a more accessible price. Powerful, layered and built for the cellar, it pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, game dishes and truffle-infused cuisine. While impressive with a long decant today, it will continue to evolve gracefully through 2040–2045 and beyond.
