The 2019 Prophet's Rock Retrospect Pinot Noir is the estate's rarest and most collectible Pinot Noir, produced from a single parcel of the organically farmed Home Vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago. Planted on ancient clay and chalk-rich soils high above the valley floor, this tiny-production wine is matured for 17 months in French oak (35% new) before being cellared at the winery for a minimum of five years prior to release. The nose is beautifully complex, revealing rose petal, wild red berries and black cherry layered with cedar, dried herbs, earthy spice and mineral notes. Awarded 98 points by James Suckling, it is a stunning expression of both vineyard and time.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins, vibrant citrus-like acidity and remarkable depth. Concentrated red and blue fruits are complemented by chalky minerality, subtle spice and a silky, seamless texture, finishing long, elegant and incredibly persistent. Refined rather than powerful, this is a world-class Central Otago Pinot Noir built to reward extended cellaring.
Ben’s Recommendation:
The 2019 Prophet's Rock Retrospect Pinot Noir is a truly exceptional Pinot Noir that pairs beautifully with roast duck, venison, beef Wellington, porcini mushroom risotto or truffle dishes. Decant for an hour if enjoying now, or cellar confidently through 2040+ as it continues to gain complexity and finesse.
