The 2019 Castello Romitorio Filo di Seta Brunello di Montalcino is one of the defining Brunellos of the modern era and a benchmark for single-vineyard Sangiovese. Produced exclusively from the Filo di Seta vineyard, located in the cool north-western sector of Montalcino, this remarkable site sits on galestro, schist and limestone soils that consistently produce wines of extraordinary finesse, mineral precision and longevity. Under the guidance of Filippo Chia, Castello Romitorio has become one of Tuscany's most acclaimed estates, and the legendary 2019 vintage has elevated Filo di Seta to world-class status, earning 98 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate along with numerous scores of 96–98 points from leading international critics. It is widely considered the finest vintage of Filo di Seta produced to date.

The nose is breathtakingly complex and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum intertwined with blood orange, dried rose petals and violet. As the wine opens, notes of wet slate, graphite and crushed stone emerge, complemented by hints of tobacco leaf, licorice, cedar and Mediterranean herbs. The aromatic profile is remarkably precise and lifted, balancing profound dark fruit with floral elegance and the striking mineral character that has become the signature of the Filo di Seta vineyard. Critics have highlighted its etched mineral quality, petrichor and wet slate notes, together with extraordinary purity and finesse.

On the palate, it is full-bodied with extraordinary concentration, impeccably polished tannins and vibrant natural acidity. Layers of black cherry, blackberry and wild plum unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by notes of graphite, tobacco, cocoa and savoury herbs. Despite its immense depth, the wine remains remarkably energetic, driven by exceptional mineral tension and crystalline freshness. The tannins are velvety yet beautifully sculpted, creating a luxurious texture that never feels heavy. The finish is extraordinarily long, precise and persistent, carrying lingering notes of dark fruits, blood orange, spice, crushed stone and floral perfume. The style is powerful yet effortless, combining the richness of Brunello with a level of elegance and transparency that places it among the very finest wines of Montalcino.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the finest Brunellos available anywhere in the world and an essential bottle for serious collectors. Compared to the outstanding 2020 Filo di Seta, the 2019 vintage offers greater concentration, deeper mineral complexity and more profound ageing potential, making it a truly benchmark release. Compared to Castello Romitorio’s classic Brunello di Montalcino, Filo di Seta delivers significantly greater precision, vineyard definition and structural finesse, comfortably standing alongside the greatest single-vineyard Brunellos such as Biondi-Santi, Poggio di Sotto and Argiano Vigna del Suolo. While already captivating with 2–3 hours of decanting, this is ultimately a wine built for generations. Drink from 2028 onwards or cellar confidently through to 2055–2060 and beyond. Perfect with bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef, venison, wild boar ragù, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle-infused dishes or the finest Tuscan cuisine.
