The 2018 Quin Wines Eden Valley Shiraz is a single-vineyard Shiraz from the Hampton Vineyard on Mengler Hill, sitting around 450 metres above sea level on the western edge of Eden Valley. Planted in 1982 on silty, sandy-loam soils over red ironstone clay, the vineyard produces a fragrant style showing mulberry and red plum alongside sarsaparilla, tea leaf, violet, spice and fresh vanilla bean.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and structured with red and dark fruit, earthy complexity and focused tannins. The fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning, destemmed into an open-top fermenter and spent 13 days on skins before basket pressing. It was then matured for ten months in seasoned French oak, keeping the oak influence restrained while adding savoury depth.
