The 2016 Château Poujeaux is widely regarded as one of the finest modern releases from this historic Moulis estate and a standout value from the exceptional 2016 Bordeaux vintage. Located on the gravel-rich plateau of Grand Poujeaux in Moulis-en-Médoc, the château has long been considered one of the leading properties of the appellation, alongside Chasse-Spleen. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The outstanding 2016 vintage delivered ideal conditions across the Left Bank, producing wines with remarkable concentration, freshness and ageing potential. Château Poujeaux produced a wine that combines ripe black fruit with classical Médoc structure and elegance. Critics described it as one of the château's best modern wines, highlighting aromas of black raspberry, cassis, graphite, violets, tobacco and subtle oak spice.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with impressive depth and balance. Layers of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum are supported by fine tannins, fresh acidity and classic Médoc notes of cedar, graphite and cigar box. The wine shows both power and refinement, with a long, structured finish that suggests significant ageing potential. Professional reviews have scored the wine around 93 points, while CellarTracker users average approximately 90 points after extensive bottle age.

Ben’s Recommendation:

At Wine More Cellars, the 2016 Château Poujeaux is one of Bordeaux's great value buys for collectors seeking mature Left Bank character without classified-growth pricing. Compared to Saint-Julien, it is slightly more rustic and earthy; compared to many Haut-Médoc wines, it offers greater concentration and pedigree. The 2016 vintage is among the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the last two decades, and Poujeaux delivered a wine that significantly overperforms its classification and price point. Now entering a superb drinking window, it combines youthful fruit with the beginnings of mature Bordeaux complexity. Drink now with an hour of decanting or cellar comfortably through 2035–2040. Perfect with roast lamb, ribeye steak, duck, venison and classic French cuisine.
