The 2016 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux is a classic Moulis-en-Médoc from one of the appellation’s most respected Cru Bourgeois estates. Situated on the prized gravel soils of the Grand Poujeaux plateau, the château has built a strong reputation for producing structured, traditionally styled Bordeaux that consistently overdeliver for value. The outstanding 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s greatest modern vintages, combining exceptional ripeness with freshness, precision and ageing potential.
The nose reveals cassis, blackberry and dark plum layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle spice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate combines concentrated black fruit with refined tannins and vibrant acidity, delivering a wine that is both powerful and beautifully balanced. Notes of liquorice, pencil lead and earthy complexity emerge with time in the glass, leading to a long, savoury finish. Wine Enthusiast rated the wine 93 points, highlighting its red berry fruit, crisp acidity and structure, while Decanter praised its ripe damson fruit and classic Médoc character.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb example of traditional Left Bank Bordeaux and one of the stronger value wines from the excellent 2016 vintage. Structured, elegant and distinctly Médocain, it pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck, venison and aged hard cheeses. Decant for at least an hour if drinking now. Entering a wonderful stage of development, it should continue to evolve gracefully through 2035–2045.
